| President’s Message | ||||||||
It’s hard to believe but 2008 is one-third of the way over; but don’t worry, you still have two-thirds of the year to begin volunteering for ASGNA in some capacity. Speaking of Volunteers, I want to publicly give a huge THANK YOU to the many people who helped at the Arizona Women’s Expo held at the University of Phoenix Stadium April 19th & 20th. What a great experience having the Super Colon at the event and educating thousands of people about the importance of colon cancer screening and awareness. If we were able to save one person’s life it was a success! I want to thank Carolyn Blair and the staff of Tucson Medical Center for hosting a very successful Spring Education Conference on April 5th. We had a good turnout and three very I Interesting topics and speakers. Even if you don’t practice a particular topic that is being presented it is always great to hear about other areas in our own specialty. The National SGNA Annual Course is just around the corner. I am looking forward to seeing everyone in Salt Lake City. Please check the message board in the registration area. Linda and I will be hosting a get-together for the Arizona group. Also at Nationals, please come to Regional Night and support the members from Arizona participating in the GI Quiz Bowl. In only a few short months the ASGNA membership will be asked to nominate someone or even themselves for two offices on the ASGNA Board. Secretary and President-Elect nominations will be called for. We need members to volunteer for these offices to keep our Region active and strong so when you get the call for nominations please don’t just throw it in the trash. Step up and nominate someone! Watch the newsletter for more information about upcoming educational events this summer. We’ll be planning to get out of the heat in August and enjoy some cool weather in Flagstaff. | GI Nurse Of The Year | ||||||||
On April 5, in Tucson Karen Georgi was awarded the GI Nurse of the year. Karen Georgi has worked at Scottsdale Healthcare since 1976. She has worked in Endoscopy for over 10 years. She recently stepped down from the Supervisor position this past summer and now works as a staff nurse in the department. She is a wealth of knowledge and a resource for ERCPs and PEG placements. She is also the computer guru for the department. She was nominated by her peers. |

| Highlighting Our Profession | ||||||||
Boswell Hospital Endoscopy can been in operation since the 1970’s. Starting from one room , graduating to two rooms, and now in July, a new department with three procedure rooms. This is an exciting time planning the new department and our own fluoroscopy room. We will be moving to the second floor and near the front entrance of the hospital. The Endoscopy department has scored greater than 90% in their Press Ganey scores for 16 months. We are one of the top 10 departments with highest scores. YEAH TEAM! We too, are a closed unit: admitting, performing procedures and recovering our patients. Sixty percent of our clients are outpatients. We also offer small bowel capsule, 24 hour pH, esophageal manometry, and deep sedation for all of our procedures. Our services are offered to the adult patient over the age of 18. We perform 350-490 procedures per month. We have 16 staff members comprised of 7 fulltime RNs, 3 part time RNs, one LPN, two techs, one CRNA and two schedulers. | Community Service | ||||||||
In April, ASGNA participated in the Women’s Expo. The "Super Colon" was on display and educational material on colon cancer prevention handed out. Great turn out of volunteers. Many women and a few men dropped by and discussed the benefits of screening colonoscopies. In May, ASGNA will continue our efforts to inform the public on colon cancer prevention at the CCFA walk at the University of Phoenix Stadium. Contact Cheryl Phillips for details to get involved. |

| Education Report | ||||||||
Our first Saturday quarterly meeting for 2008 was held at Tucson Medical Center on April 5th . A big thank you to Carolyn Blair and her team for their hospitality and efforts. Three CEUs were awarded for this meeting and speakers included: Dr. Pratt on The Use of Impedence in Esophageal Motility, Care of the Bronchoscopy Patient by Dr. Huang and Anesthesia Needs in the Endoscopy Suite by Dr. Clyde. Open discussion followed each presentation. Cook Medical provided the continental breakfast. Our next quarterly meeting will be held on June 7th @ CIGNA Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. We hope to offer 3 CEUs. Time of the meeting will be from 0800 – 1200. Sue Plesinger, CGRN |
